As the title says, I’m ready to fire up a Lemmy server of my own. I have a suitable VPS running Debian 11. I think I can probably make short work of it once I get past this one difficult point. What should I call my Lemmy server? With catchy names out there like “Lemmy.World” and “sh.itjust.works”, I really want to come up with something good. Unfortunately after thinking it over for three days now and checking tons of names for availability, I don’t feel any closer to deciding on a name. It doesn’t help that almost all the dictionary words are sold at premium rates these days, even with a fairly obscure tld. Any name suggestions or techniques for choosing a good name would be appreciated. It probably sounds silly but this part just isn’t my strong suit and I’m frustrated that it’s holding up the project.

I got lemmy.cyou when I thought I could figure out how to host, but can’t seem to get my compose file right.

I’m in no way capable of giving you advice as I’m very new to Lemmy but aren’t domain names kinda related to the goal of their “content”?

If your goal is to create a “kitchen sink” sorta thing aimed more toward your own interests then why not use your username? As in: trinity.tek

I think it kinda works honestly but again, I have no skin in this game.

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately the closest thing is trinity.tech and it’s been in use since 2007. If it were available they’d probably charge me a premium rate for it too. Single dictionary words are generally more expensive. I’m kind of being a choosing beggar I guess but I really want a catchy domain name cheap.

I snagged lemmyw.ink to roll one soon. Lemmiw.ink, too, for good measure.

I was very tickled with myself.

The winks domain name looks to have several good tld’s available for it. You could use a South Park reference and go for a lemmy.winks domain.

Some examples I saw available:

  • lemmy.winks.rocks
  • lemmy.winks.host
  • lemmy.winks.site
  • lemmy.winks.cloud
  • lemmy.winks.website

Likewise, the “forme” domain name has some good tld’s available.

Some others I’ve found (with “lemmy” prepended)

  • lemmy.by.ninja
  • lemmy.without.me
  • lemmy.without.rest
  • lemmy.is.legal
  • lemmy.is.global

Gonna stop there because I don’t think that I can top the “is.global” domain.
